Canon or Nikon?

If I were you, I would go to a camera shop and talk to the salesman. You don't have to buy that day. Take both cameras down and look. There is also a D40X or DX40. It is better than the D40.

Nikon makes two types of DSLR lenses, and I am terrible at explaining all of this because I pick up the camera and just use it by the seat of my pants!!! But the developed an "anti-shake" technology to help you use your camera without needing a tripod. The Nikon site can tell you about it, plus there are tons of camera sites that will compare the various features for you.

You should pick them up and touch them before purchasing. When comparing prices, make sure you are comparing apples to apples....the D40 vs. the D40X/DX40 (I can't remember the correct model) and whether the lenses are the regular or anti-shake lenses.

Some stores even offer great deals on manufacturer's promo/refurbished cameras and lenses.

The camera that will replace the D60 is already out. It's the D5000....
See it here http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikond5000/ It has better resolution and combines a lot of the D60 with the D90. But nothing below a D80 has an internal lens servo, which limits the lenses you can use. That applies to the DSLR's though. I don't think the Canon has it either.

And before you get either the Canon or the Nikon I would suggest looking at this one. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicdmcg1/ Especially look at the differences in the comparisons with the Canon 450D (It's another Rebel)...

The Panasonic costs more, but I'm sure anyone would be exceptionally pleased with the results of it. Plus Panasonic uses Leica glass and lenses and you can't get much better than that.

Of course if someone put a gun to my head and said "Choose between the Canon or the Nikon" I'd go with the Nikon. Nikon's have really good glass.

And before going by what people say here, I would check them out on www.dpreview.com first. But if you're using it just for everyday shooting you may not care too much about the details.

I like them both. I had a hard time choosing between the two. The price finally decided for me when the canon went on sale for a ridiculously low price.
