Can't believe NBC showed video of fatal luge crash

Yes, hear hear!

Honestly, how could they possibly claim the value or advantage of showing such stuff? They're only appealing to that little part of us that is fascinated by violence and exploiting it to get viewers to watch their station. Sick.

I saw that and not only it is disrespectful but it would deter future Olympic Lugers thinking "oh that is going to happen to me". Then no one would want to do it. Sports have their own risks and it is ONE of those risks and mistakes will be made on all sides. Tour de France was one of those "disrespectful" showings from the media about one biker got killed and they played it over and over. It is just as bad as reviewing Princess Di's death again and again that the images in my head and the shock of it all replays everytime her name is mentioned. Now I do not want my daughter seeing that either.

At least they will start looking into the safety issues of the luger tracks and do a very thorough job padding up the beams and what's nots. There is going to still have accidents but at least we can put deaths to near zero or come out alive with horrific crashes....NASCAR has done a good job with the technology they have on hand, so does the Olympics.

Unfortunately, we are a society that thrives on violence, drama and the misery of others and the media (aka vultures) justify their actions by catering to our needs.

There is a saying about the media world and news: "If it bleeds, it leads".

If nobody supported this kind of behaviour the media would change their way of doing things.

(remember in the old days there were the gladiator shows, the public executions by hanging and head chopping, stoning, etc?)

I watched it several times, on the internet, only because it happened so fast, that you couldn't really observe what went wrong...It was brutal, and despite them telling us, that he died in the hospital, I'm guessing, that he was dead, on impact.

Obviously, a major design flaw, without any pregame testing or observation...I would also wager, that they were trying to conserve space, and put too many events into too small a space, thus running the luge through the underside of the bleachers, or the skijump, or whatever was above.

One of many reasons we got rid of the TV last year.
I am so sorry for those that saw it accidentally.
Our bodies and minds do not need to deal with all the filth and violence that is broadcast.
And it is braodcast over and over, ensuring that "we" become numb and need more filth to keep it interesting.

I Was disturbed by that video..... Must be real shocking to people that dont see stuff like that all the time.

If it was in the US the footage would be banned from release because that was a government owned camera.

There are thousands of videos just like this that never air. The IOC an Canada are the ones that should have not let the video out. As far as the news showing it once it is in there hands, they have to. If ABC shows it an NBC don't then NBC loses viewers an then there sponsors. News is news. There job it to air the news that makes it to them, good or bad. Its our job to watch what our kids see. An its the job of the person that owns the camera that catches these bad videos to choose if there should be released.

As for the boy. He died on impact. Concrete beam with his head an neck at 80+. He never felt it. An had no hart beat or life signs by the time the first person got to him. But out of respect they worked him till an ER doc said no more.

No amount of padding would have helped. The track needs 5 foot walls with a lexan roof. That being said, they were told that it was the fastest track in the world an they chose to compete at the top level.... Its going to happen sometime.

So now what do we do? Leave it be an let them race or slow it down an make it all show an no go like nascar?

My sentements too. That boy never felt this impact, clearly DOA and even if the poles were padded, at that speed if you don't get killed you are going to be physically handicapped. I believe luge is known to be very dangerous and yet athletes do take chances with a lot of these sports. That said, I don't see why it should not have been shown, maybe by showing it someone else may survive in a similar accident in the future.
