DE at pool supply distributors IS DE; in the bag, new, fresh and is used for the filters in tropical fish tanks as well. I know, I've used it. Did not kill my dog, cat, birds or my fish and my garden loved not being bothered by those pesky bugs..
Back wash kill off is sometimes caused by salt water filter systems and/or high chlorine levels.

It may be DE, but it is not FOOD GRADE DE, used in feed to kill bugs. Pool filter DE is 85% silicon, as opposed to the 1% silicon in food chemical codex grade DE. Pool filter DE is not safe to put in your coops, dust wallows, feed, etc.

Swimming Pool and Filter DE is poison to your animals. It may not kill them off initially but continued exposure and usage will eventually do them in. Silicon poisoning is not a pretty sight.

Is Diatomaceous Earth really good at fighting ticks and fleas? To cover a big dog yard just how much would one have to use? Just sprinkle it everywhere?, like with a seed spreader (have one). I'm considering Guineas at my new place as ticks are a major problem out there. Little tiny teeny ticks. Anybody know if it works on Chiggers? They're a problem too. Since it's food grade, I'm assuming sprinkling it everywhere won't hurt the Guineas who are eating the bugs that are crawling around in it.

Sounds like great stuff. I'll have to see if the local feed store out there offers it. If they don't, I'm sure they can order it.

I think I read that DE is also put in our boxed food like macaroni. It keeps out the bugs or something like that. I sprinkle it everywhere. Its kills bugs because they have exoskeletons where we and our beloved animals have our inner skeleton. So your guineas will be fine. It also says you can mix DE into there food
