I have a month old Barred Rock I got expecting it to be a laying hen. If I keep him I'll probably get "called" on and lose all my chickens. What should I do? I'm terrified to give him to some random person that might hurt / eat him or mistreat him. He's beautiful but it's not possible to keep him with me once he starts to crow..

Thanks in advance.

Where are you located? You could try posting him on your local thread here on BYC and also in the "Animals In Need of Rehoming" section and you might be able to find him a good home that way.

Nice picture.
If you want to keep him and dont want him to crow you can get the no-crow rooster collar which makes roosters unable to crow and it doesnt hurt roosters and it is very comfurtabale. Links:http://www.mypetchicken.com/catalog/Chicken-Supplies/No-Crow-Rooster-Collar-p1580.aspx
You could also find him a good home on byc like @Pyxis
said which is a good idea.

Actually, with these they can crow, it's just quieter :) That's a good suggestion though; supposedly when wearing them roosters are no louder than a hen.

I think rather than try to get around the rules and possibly lose their whole flock, the OP needs to do the right thing and rehome the bird. The best thing to do is not ask what the plans are and move on.

Barred rock roosters are a dime a dozen around me. If I were to rehome one it would likely be to someone who had plans to eat him. It might be difficult, but I'd be inclined to process him myself just so I knew he went humanely. OP, I hope you find a solution.

Oops, that's what i meant. Lol:) I did not know it makes roosters that quiet... That's cool:)
