My chick, Kiwi, seems to not be able to peck the food without pecking around it, then she tajes ages to figure out which way to peck it so she gets it.
She did have a lumpy (ingrown feather) neck problem a few weeks ago but it is fixed now. She is acting normal except she bumps into me sometimes. She can see me well from far away so I reckon there is something wrong with her close up vision.
Her eyes look normal so I don't know why she can't see well.
If it was her crest (she's a silkie) getting in the way of her vision, why can she still see things far away?
I can take pics later but I have to leave soon

Photos please.

She may need a trimming to be able to see ok.
If you have a video of what you mean by not able to peck food without pecking around it, that would be good too - upload video to youtube and provide a link.

If she needs a trim, I still don't understand why she cant see the food right in front of her but can see me coming with the treats from far away.

I can't upload to youtube but I can convert it to a GIF to send

Cant get a video but I'll describe it.

  1. Walking to the coop with food
  2. She sees me and gets excited
  3. She runs into my legs when I crouch down
  4. I put food down
  5. She pecks next to the food multiple times, missing it
  6. It takes many tries to finally get it

Hard to get a pic of her eyes since when I pick her up, she takes a nap

If plucking/trimming around her eyes doesn't help and she still has trouble, maybe she just can't see very well. I have a BO hen that struggles with pecking at stuff. I'll hold a mealworm out for her and it'll take her a couple tries to get it. But she's the top girl on the pecking order so it doesn't affect her too much. But hopefully for Kiwi it's just her fluff.
