You don't need to add symbol when you're starting a conversation.

Will they still be able to continue in the pm without me there?

Over there on the right in that conversation info box...
Or at the very bottom of the page... You should have an option to invite more.

The invite more option is at the bottom of conversation info box.

It works!
I can start a conversation and then leave the conversation and the others can continue on in the conversation.

Thanks! The invite button was at the bottom left for my iPad, but only in portrait mode. I'm not a very good nerd. I really appreciate everyone's help!
