I just found this site when we started thinking about getting chicks back in February and looking at coop designs. Now I've just posted on the forum for the first time.
We live in the mountains in Southern Oregon, with plenty of chicken predators. I have a husband who eats at least a dozen eggs a week so is very supportive so far. We have 3 daughters ages 3, 6 and 15. We also have 4 cats, 4 dogs and a horse.
We just got 2 barred rock, 2buff orpington, 2RIR, 2 ameracaunas, and 2 danish brown leghorns. So far so good. I'm hoping for smooth sailing, not only for my girls hearts, but also my own. They are very cute and we are already very attached. My fifteen year old who is the typical cynical teenager on the outside and claimed she would never touch the chickens has named the ameracaunas and spends as much time as the rest of us watching and handling them.
If all goes well we hope to cycle in more chickens over the next few years. Every two years is the plan if we can resist getting chicks every other spring. A bear got my neighbors chickens, but we hope we can be smarter. (than the neighbor and the bear)
