Can't take the smell!!

Any ideas to help eliminate the nasty poop smell from my compost??? Love the chickens, hate the smell!!

.......hmmm how much poo did you put in there? Is it just poo in the pile and is it a open compost or a closed barrel type compost?

Mine is open & I put everything in there but there isn't much smell.

How wet is it? Mine only smells if we get alot of rain. You may try covering it so it will dry out a bit.

Yes please do this and it will help all the bad odors and flies
go to the lumber yard and buy a bag of Hydrated slake Lime
it id white and comes in 50 ;b bags
not cement lime either
if you use it always wear a mask so the wind doesn't blow it up in your face
I always sprinkled it under ny rabbit hutches on the manure
and on my compost pile
as when sprin came we put it on the garden and tilled it into the soil

it does away with odors and definetly flies in the summer time

I do not have that problem at all. My compost pile is large, open and I wet it down really well and cover it with a black tarp and the microorganisms do their thing. Never had a smell problem.

The key to good composting is to have the proper balance of ingredients, all mixed together. It sounds like maybe you have too high a concentration of poo, without any plant material to balance it out. Try adding some green lawn clippings and some dry leaves, in somewhat equal amounts. Always try to alternate brown/green and it will stay more balanced . . . and sometimes I add some plain soil to the mix to help the consistency too. Good luck and hoping for a less stinky tomorrow!
