I put my eggs into lockdown yesterday and when I went in to check on the chicks this morning I noticed my incubator temp was down to 87!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I quickly moved them into the second unit and they all are still wiggling but I didn't need the stress

It looks like the heating unit went out! The cooling unit still works but no heat! It is two years old and one month past the warranty! Go figure!!!

I have my first set of eggs in the incubator! I have never tried it before and I do NOT have a fancy set-up at all. It is just an old redwood box but it hold temps good without fluctuation. I did not have hygrometer in there at all until the day before yesterday. When I did put one in there the temp gauge on it reads only 98 degrees, so I hope the other thermometer is the correct one. I have a third I want to add but at this point I think I should just leave well enough alone. The person that loaned me the incubator uses that thermometer and no hygrometer with some success. I am in lockdown now so not much I can do but cross my fingers. I had candled at 7 days and removed any that looked infertile 5 out of 30 and one that had a blood ring. At day 14 I candled again and removed 4 that looked like they had died. The rest are full of chicks! I hope they all are at the same point of development because some looked farther along. I used eggs I had found in the greenhouse so I suppose they may have started developing a little before I started incubating. We will see in about two days! The eggs are from my Jearhons that just started laying in August. This is really fun but I am afraid it will be sad if some don't make it! I may need support!

I added another thermometer and it also reads lower! I am so sad, the temp is only 98 degrees. It has been that the whole time. Since the eggs will hatch later than usual should I try and get the humidity lower until tomorrow or the next day? I don't want to drown them when they pip. Would raising the temp help at all at this point? So nervous!!!!!!!!

This has been, and continues to be, a wonderful learning experience for our homeschooled children (and me, too!)

Do you know your humidity? I would raise it (temp) a hair. If no one else helps, I would post a thread in this incubation and hatching eggs for help. Has any of your thermometers been calibrated? Look that up in the search.
