Can't wait to start hatching soon! Anyone else with 10/14 hatch day?

Candling is pretty neat, you can see the tiny chick eye at about a week.
There are some great candling pictures on here for reference.
I have a 20 year old son, who is kinda trying to figure out what
he wants to do with his life, an 18 year old daughter who is a
sophomore honors student in college, and an 11 year old son, who
is my only student. The older two were homeschooled all
the way through. My daughter swims at a division 2
college, most of her tuition is paid through academic and
athletic scholarships. So, stick with it, it's very rewarding!

Welcome to the thread! We started hatching eggs last year for our school project and promptly got addicted to chickens

I'm hoping at least one of my two homeschooled children will one day get swim scholarships to pay for their college. They both swim now with a year round team and do summer swim. They are completely enjoying our chickens.

It's a fun whole family project - and that's how we got started with chickens. My 10yo and 8 year old, whom I homeschool, wanted to hatch quail eggs - I switched to chicken eggs and I'm glad I did. To watch those little chicks go from being a tiny blob with spider veins to hatching was incredible. Love watching them feather out too.

Here are a few hatching pics from our last two clutches.

Our five 11 week old White Leghorns - 13 eggs, 6 hatched, 1 died on day 3 after hatch. 4 are roos, 1 is a pullet:

Our 7.5 week old little AC (Ancona) - 14 eggs, 1 hatched - she is doing well, we had purchased 2 brooder mates for her of the same age:

I know - my DH has gave up asking me about how many eggs and chicks I've hatched and am getting LOL! He now actually seems interested as opposed to annoyed. He'll come around

Since it's Day 8 in the incubator - I will candle tonight to see what we have growing. Anyone else ever candle a bantam or Silkie? Will it be any different then a standard breed? I'm thinking it will be the same stage of development, only on a smaller scale.

Day 10 update - I culled the eggs that weren't developing today and actually got a pleasant surprise. I had thought that only 3 of my BCM eggs were viable, but I guess I miscounted because there are actually 4!

So I have 15 eggs left in the bator - 5 (out of 6 shipped) Swedish Flower Hen, 4 (out of 12 shipped) Black Copper Marans, and 6 (out of 6 of our own) Barred Rock. One of the BR is actually 5 days behind the others because I broke one early on (it was viable, too). So I guess our roo Charlie is doing his job!
