And of course the hatch calendar on the door to the closet
Hi we are a new chicken family, and we live in Indianapolis, IN. I have a question, is it too late in the year for us to get baby chicks?? I understand that they will be inside for about 2 months, then we should graduallly acclimate them to the outside. That puts us at about Thanksgiving in Indiana, usually 34-50 degree weather during the day, possibly down to the 30 degree mark at night. Would this be ok for young chickens?
i couldnt find any chicks right now unless it was on certaint websights, but thats y i decided to hatch my own, u cna check out chicken websights and c if u can still order any

Robin, there will be a major chicken show in Indianapolis during October 28-30. You may be able to get some young chickens then. At the very least it would be a great opportunity to see the different breeds and talk to the breeders.

Are you trying to determine if it's not a good thing to get chicks now because it would be too cold in your region? If so, I think as long as you keep them in the brooder until they are fully feathered and then move them out together as a flock into your draft free coop - you should be fine. They just need to have their feathers before they get moved. Depends on the breed how soon - my White Leghorns were mostly feathered by 4 weeks so I put them out in the coop of course it was late summer. If it were now I might put a heat lamp in with them until they hit the 8 week level and watch whether they hid in the corner or huddled under the lamp.
