So I'm looking at caponizing kits and reading reviews about how crappy they are. I started looking around for a decent spreader as that seems to be the biggest gripe about the kits. I found what looks like a usable spreader based on a recommendation I found somewhere in and among the numerous threads here talking about the kits.

While I was hunting for the spreader, I found anatomy students' dissection kits, suture kits and veterinary kits that look like they have most of the same tools as the caponizing kits, the tools look better quality, and the cost to buy a medical kit and the spreader would be less or at the very least, equal to the caponizing kits I find offered. Is there any reason to get a "caponizing" kit or would I do better to get other medical kits with the tools needed to do the deed?

I thought, with folks here having actual experience, that someone might have insight for me. I guess not. I'm going to go ahead and get the anatomy dissection kit. It looks like it has all the tools except the spreader and the cost of the kit and the spreader is less than the price of the known crappy caponizing kits. The tools look to be better quality. I'll let you know in a couple of weeks how I make out.

Please post what you think of the kit if you will. I'd like to learn to caponize myself. A link to the kit you found would be sweet too! Bill

Thank you for posting. I was hearing quite an echo in here.

I'll post. My birds are 3 weeks now, so I have some time to research some kits and mail-order something.

Right now, I'm looking at
Retractor: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0017JV0VQ

and one or more of something like these:

Medical kit 1: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0017JV0VQ

Medical kit 2: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B012BNXIH0?psc=1

Medical kit 3: http://www.amazon.com/ADVANCED-DISSECTING-DISSECTION-HTI-BRAND/dp/B00JRKI8LC/

Medical kit 4: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B010LBUQ3I?psc=1

Once I decide on which one/ones, I'll price shop them. Amazon isn't always the least expensive source anymore.

I have watched a few on line videos. I have talked to a few that have seen it done. But I know no one that can actually show me hands on. I have seen a old thread about a class that I would like to have attend. But I found the thread much too late. It was a bit expensive, and in Oklahoma, about a 6 hr drive..... But would have been well worth it for a "hands on" "how to" education! I have a lot of birds to learn on, but Id hate to kill more than a few learning the art. How do you intend to teach yourself? Bill

I'm in the same situation. I'm looking to start caponizing our extra roosters. Can't wait to hear what you think of these tools!
