Hello all, I am wondering about the feasibility of capons as flock members (aka pets) rather than for meat purposes. I cannot find any information on life span of capons vs roosters. I received 'warmer chicks' with my last order and am super interested in turning them into capons. Not really interested in having roosters but don't want to eliminate them (they are super cute!) And they are not in high demand in my area. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Castrating cockerels is difficult abdominal surgery, formerly done without anesthesia on the farm, with death commonly occurring.
It might be possible to find an avian veterinarian who will do it, and it must be done at a very young age. If you seriously are interested, start calling now to find someone.
Capons grow very large, and weren't meant to live long as pets. I would think that joint or heart problems might be real issues for them, although I've no experience.
Mary
