Car Ideas?

Thanks! This was so helpful! I'm starting to look into Mazdas now. I have read they don't have as much tech.

We went to a couple dealerships tonight and just looked at cars. I was able to test drive a Ford Edge. At the last dealership we stopped at, it was after hours and when we tried to leave, we found they had locked us in! Thankfully we were able to get a mechanic to let us out. Not doing that again...

Wow! I'd think they were trying to force us to stay until we bought something, lol. I'm glad you escaped!

The Mazda 3's do have a hatchback version that is still small enough to be fuel efficient, but can fit more than our sedan version.
Of course there's the bigger models too. I never really thought I cared about fuel efficiency in the past, but having experienced it I realize how convenient it is not to have to stop for gas all the time and I really haven't worried as the gas prices bounce all over the place, even though we're on a tight budget.

Camry? Midsize 4 door sedan. Or an accord.

I'm a fan of the Sorento, but 2019 or later models. They may still be more than 20k resale.

What about a small pickup like a tacoma?

No sedans, unfortunately.
I don't want anything later than 2019 because it's chock full of tech. I'll add Sorentos and Tacomas to my research list though!

You can turn off all the nannies in most modern cars. Even a 2019 sorento has them (depending on trim level) but they can be permanently disabled except the collision alert warning. However, that very rarely goes off and if it does it's for a reason.

if memory serves, it's a sensory thing for you right? all the safety dings and stuff? Look for more base models, they will have less of that. Some of it you can't get around because it's federally mandated, but most of it you can.

This is good to know.
What about the dash screen? Do you know if those can be dimmed at night? ‘Cause I’ve seen people driving around at night with a brightly lit dash and that would so distracting for me.

They all have multiple levels of brightness. Wifey and I have sensitive eyes so we dim them all the way down and it's bearable.

Something else you might look into Eva, for the models you are considering, see if there are youtube vids available that go over the various tech features and related noises/ warning indicators. That will arm you for what you might expect if you choose a given model.

That’s a good idea, thanks! We’re going out to look at cars now…my mom says we’re not coming home without one . This is going to be a long day!

Good luck! And look at it this way. It may be a long day, but new (to you) car!
