Terrick looked back toward the wagons, watching in dismay as the last wagon rolled backwards down the hill. It looked like the girl was still fighting with the nervous horses, probably intending on stealing those too, he figured. "******! Don't let her get the horses!" Terrick was already on the move, hoping to salvage something from this disaster.

Rorik, with help from two other bandits, had pushed back a caravan guards and a trader until they were backed up against one of the other wagons. He let out a "whoop" of excitement when he saw the wagon slipping backwards down the hill. He put two fingers in the corners of his mouth and let out a loud whistle. At the cue, the bandits starting a fighting retreat toward the loose wagon.

Linden left Terrick's side, trusting that the other man would be capable of handling himself and pushed towards the rear of the wagon. There was still quite a crowd but at least now they were moving in the same direction as him, towards the wagon. He swung the axe and pushed his way through the battling men with brute force until he managed to reach the back of the wagon.

For a moment he debated turning his back to push the wagon, but decided that it would only increase his chances of getting an arrow in the back. So instead he kept the axe at his side and pressed his back up against the wagon to try and slow its movement. At first the wagon seemed to almost speed up as Linden pushed with all his strength to keep it from moving, but slowly it began to slow down.

As the wagon started to slow from Linden's efforts, Rorik hurriedly caught up with it and stepped up on the drivers seat. He moved into the covered part of the wagon, intending to make his way through and simply slit the throat of the caravan guard that was holding it back. But the wagon was full of crates and cargo and Rorik wasn't able to make it through at quietly as he would have liked.

Terrick rushed toward the horses and Brylla cursed to herself when she realized she had attracted attention. She had been trying to lead the horses back toward the woods, but the animals were certainly no trained warhorses and were making circles around Brylla as she tried to calm them. But when she spotted Terrick rushing toward her, she abandoned her efforts and let go of the reins. The caravan guard was almost upon her and the girl barely had time to raise her short sword in an awkward parry.

Linden shoved a bandit away from him and took a second to look behind him when he heard supplise falling over inside. Assuming that the bumpy ride had simply jarred some things loose, he was surprised to see Rorick coming towards him. He tried to swing the long, heavy axe up to fend the crazy leader off but stumbled in the deep wagon ruts and fell. Although he was no long an immediate target for Rorick anymore, he narrowly avoided being crushed by the wagon wheels as it rolled overtop of him, beginning to slowly gain speed again.

Now that he was turned back towards the battle, Mavis experimented with the control he had over the horse and found that he could stop, start and do some wide turns. It wasn't perfect and he had never ridden bareback before, but it would have to do. He also had to contend with not having a weapon, which he supposed wasn't the end of the world. Even if he did have something, he wouldn't have known how to use it. Instead he decided to use the horses bulk to simply run down the bandits, and steering the horse gingerly with the rope, he selected Brylla as his first target.

(Sorry for being slow. My old ibook finally bit the dust, so I'm stealing some time on my husband's computer. :) )

"Looks like payday for us!" Rorik hollered to his men as the wagon was picking up speed again, not caring if the caravan guard that had disappeared from view happened to be crushed under its weight. The brigands were still moving with the rolling wagon, turning into the defenders of it, rather than the attackers of the three remaining wagons.

Terrick jumped backwards out of the way when he saw Mavis heading into the fray. At first he thought the boy was going to make an attempt to grab the two loose horses since he had a way with the large beasts. But to Terrick's great surprise, the boy rode his steed straight toward the brigand girl. Apparently, the move caught the girl completely off guard too, for she didn't get out of the way in time and was knocked to the muddy ground as the horse's shoulder slammed into her back. She was slow to get up, as the heavy mud sucked at her hands and knees. Terrick was quick to take advantage of her vulnerable position and knocked her short sword away from her grasp. "We'll make a warrior out of you yet, boy!" he said, his voice full of praise for the boy's bravery.

(No worries! :) )

Linden breathed a temporary sigh of relief, only to be smacked across the head with the wagon hitch seconds later. In the chaos of the battle he had neglected to consider that the wagon hitch would be following the wagon as it rolled backwards. The blow nearly knocked him out and caused a searing pain that felt like a chisel was being hammered through his skull. Too stunned to even move, it took him nearly a minute to come back to his senses and sit up. "You there..." He panted, trying to make sense of what he was saying as pointed randomly to two travelers who had paused to make sure he was alright. Even with his battered head it didn't take much to figure out that the bandits would be after the single wagon, and they couldn't afford that kind of loss. "Stay with the other wagons..." They could guard the other three while the rest went over the single one. Not bothering to see if they had listened, he jerked his head around and looked for Terrick to make sure he was still alive.

Mavis grinned from ear to ear as the horse bounced underneath him, finally, he felt some sense of belonging and usefullness. Even if it wasn't in brute strength like the others. "Here," he held out his hand to Terrick. "Hop on, I'll give you a lift!" After the scuffle with Brylla the pair were quite a ways away now from the rolling wagon, it would be much quicker for them to run over on horseback as opposed to trying to run on foot.

"I'm better on my own feet!" Terrick yelled to the boy. If he tried to climb on the high back of the horse, he was likely to fall off before they ever made it to the other wagon, and probably drag Mavis off with him.

As the sword flew out of Brylla's reach and the heavy mud felt as if it was trying to engulf her, she felt a rising panic. She should have gotten herself out of the fray or at least made her way toward the rest of the bandit crew trying to claim the wagon she had sent rolling down the hill. But instead, she lunged at the caravan guard that had knocked her weapon away, attempting to knock him over. She was too slow and Terrick turned in time to see her desperate attempt. It was pure reaction on his part to slam the hilt of his weapon across her temple and the girl fell back to the mud, her world fading to black.

The caravan guard felt a pang of guilt. Fighting men was one thing, but hurting a woman, even one trying to kill him, never sat right with him. But he brushed off the feeling and started rushing after Mavis toward the rolling wagon.

(After a long break... I realized that I neglected to reply to you! Sorry lol)

Linden stumbled to his feet, still rubbing the spot on his head where a rather large red lump had begun to form. He spotted Terrick behind Mavis and the horse and waved desperately, "Terrick over here!" He shouted, gesturing to the runaway wagon and Rorik. "These good for nothin' bandits ain't takin' nothin' of my payload as long as I'm still breathin'!"

Mavis' smile faltered as Brylla's head hit the mud. The horse jerked sideways underneath him, still unnerved by the shouts of the battling men, and he narrowly avoided being thrown off in his temporary lapse of concentration. Not even taking her gender into account, Mavis had been strictly brought up as a gentle, kind hearted kid. One who did well in school and stayed away from the petty brawls of the other boys. Before his mind could become too wrapped up in his own guilt, he forced his gaze away from her limp body and turned his horse towards Linden and the wagon. The animal moved willingly and was soon trotting at a quick pace through the slippery mud.

Terrick tried to take better stock of the situation as he hurried toward the loose wagon. A few of the bandits were either dead or injured enough to be out of the fight, but the guards had taken a few casualties as well, which meant the guards were still outnumbered. Most were heavily engaged near the wagon and Terrick witnessed another guard slip in the heavy mud, only to have his skull bashed in a moment later.

Terrick altered his course slightly as two of the bandits stepped forward to try to intercept Mavis and the sellsword rushed to lend aid. The bandit closer to him turned to meet his attack, parrying Terrick's first blow and swung back, the bandit's rusty blade only thwarted by heavy leather armor.

By this time Linden had managed to once again catch up to the runaway wagon. Most of the bandits and guards were occupied with each other, and he managed to reach the wagon hitch which had run across his head not long before without being noticed. The mud pulled and sucked at his boots as he struggled to keep pace with the rolling wagon. He wasn't sure whether Rorik was still inside or not, but after looking around for a few moments he concluded that he couldn't see him battling outside, so that meant he was likely still inside. He pulled one boot from the mud and hauled himself up onto the hitch, and from there to the drivers seat. The canvas tarp which covered the wagon blocked his view inside the covered area, so he pulled a small portion of it away for him to peek inside.

Mavis grabbed the horse's mane and tried to steer it away from the remaining bandit attempting to intercept him. Initially the horse attempted to change its direction, but the loud shouting and waving of weapons by the bandit spooked the horse. It reared suddenly and violently, throwing Mavis backwards. He reached desperately for the horse's mane, but his arms were too short and he was already sliding backwards. He hit the mud back first and was momentarily blinded by the mud which quickly covered his entire body. "Terrick!" He shouted, spitting mud out of his mouth. "Help! I can't get up!" The mud sucked at his arms and legs and pulled him down like quick sand, the more he thrashed, the deeper it got.
