Cardboard brooder box just caught fire !!!

A heat option is the type of heat pad used for reptiles, very tough, water resistant, steady heat that won't ever get hot enough to burn anything. I have them on all my lizard tanks for many years without a failure or a short. Normal people heating pads are NOT meant for constant use and can easily short out.

My new brooder will have a regular brood bulb securely suspended and a reptipad plugged into another outlet on another circuit so if one goes out they will still have the other.

I use number 3 galvanized washtubs with a 100 watt light bulb over it, clamped down tight and then tied just in case the clamp fails. You can usually find those old washtubs at flea markets and yard sale at a reasonable price. Sorry that happended to you and I am so glad it was not worse!

I used a bird cage with a light from a chain above, not a heat lamp they were fine

Wow, scary! Glad that you caught it in time and you, the chicks, and the building were all alright!

I am always afraid of something like this happening, I am such a worry wart. This is why I like using my tanks (aquariums) as brooders - they are made to withstand that kind of heat.

I have used a fish tank before and it worked well for quail its just to small for these guys the metal wash tub looks like my best option the bird cage would have worked but I got rid of all my cage bird supplies when I sold my finch breeders off.

Thanks,
Henry

Thanks I am either getting a large fish tank of a large metal wash tub tonight.

Henry
