I have a 2 year old Rhode Island Red. She has yellowing around her eye/ears, no swelling or puffyness. Her nails are getting extra long. She spends most of her time being perched. She does have a cut on her left foot. Any thoughts of what could be going on with her? I have 20 chickens all together and she's the only one that just sits all the time.

Who old is she? What are you feeding? Who long has this been happening? What is your coop and run setup? What bedding do you use? Does she still eat and drink on her own? What is her poop like? Can you get pictures of the yellowing? Does is seem like discharge? Also a picture of the cut please. I hope I can help! Avery

we do cracked corn and extra egg layer. Our coop is 16’ x 8’so it’s plenty big enough. I was using sweet pdz but have run out so no bedding or anything else. She still eats anddrinks on her own. There is no discharge.

Wow that is weird. For her foot, rinse it in Saline Solution, or warm water. Apply NEosproin and wrap her foot with Vet wrap, over the wound.

How much corn are you feeding?
The scales on her feet are not discernible. The yellow tinge to her skin looks jaundice to me which would indicate liver failure.
I would immediately stop feeding anything but a complete chicken ration.
You can try soaking those feet in warm epsom salt water and gently cleaning with a soft toothbrush to loosen dead scales and any dried crusty material then apply a liberal coating of triple antibiotic ointment to her legs. I don't recommend covering them.
She should be placed in a crate with food and water in a warm location to try to recover. Try offering her some cooked egg and Poultry Nutri-drench or Rooster Booster.

This advice is better then mine. Listen to her before me! :goodpost:

we usually buy one bag of each and do half n half but it’s all mixed together. We do have 2 heat lamps in the coop and it is insulated. I will definitely try separating her and changing her food. Thanks everyone for the tips!

Corn does not have but half of the protein and none of the other nurtrients needed for a chicken laying eggs. They will eat it in preference to the chicken feed which is not good. Yes it is cheaper, but for $4 more a bag, they will get better nutrition. All flock feed or layer feed has all of the vitamins and minerals, and everything they need. I agree that she might have a liver issue because of her yellow skin. How does her lower belly between her legs look? Is it enlarged, spongy or tight, compared to othes? She might develop ascites or water belly. Corn or scratch has a tendency to cause them to become fat and that increases chances for fatty liver disease and early death.

It is hard to know what happened to her feet. She has scally leg mites, and most of the scales are missing. She may have been pecking at her own feet, but sometimes rats will bite feet and toes off while they are roosting. She definitely needs to be in a warm place getting a daily warm soak to her feet. I would use either Epsom salts, a little dish soap in the water, or some Hibiclens. Apply plain Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment daily.
