Today we had a rain that was had enough to strangle frogs, so when I got home I went out to check on the birds. Much to my chagrin I found my blue ameraucana lying dead under the ramp to the coop. I built my coop on concrete x-blocks so to keep birds from going under it I cut a piece of 2x4 welded wire and stapled it to the house. The ground contact side of the wire I left a 3" wire "stake" every 2" that I shoved into the ground. Apparently this wasn't very secure and the wire would move. Somehow she managed to get her neck under the wire, got caught by one of the "stakes" and couldn't free herself. I should have recognized the potential problem and devised a safer and more secure method to prevent them from getting hung up. Maybe this post will get others to check their fencing and avoid a similar mishap.

opa, tut mir leid!

Lord, chickens will get into any and everything ~ like feathery toddlers, but worse! We can't always plan for everything they get into. All we can do is try.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us, and do find peace re. your girl.
