Hello,

I am in the midst of trying to acquire my first chicks, but am now receiving some push back from my husband and sister (who will be my chicken partner in crime).

I am currently expecting, and they are worried that handling chicks or changing the shavings. We have a cat as well and my husband handles the litter ... but he isn't as enthused as I am about the chicks and I feel like that would be the tipping point if I were to ask him to clean the shavings.

I have a friend who keeps chickens on the farm all while she was expecting her first and now second ... and I feel like its definitely do-able. It would omly be for 4 weeks, as when they move into the coop my sister would take over the cleaning.

Does anyone have feedback on this topic?

Pregnancy isn't a debilitating medical condition where the victim needs to be shielded from any and all pathogens at all cost. Simply washing your hands religiously after handling the chicks and brooding material will safeguard against any bacteria entering your system. This goes for anyone handling chicks and brooding material. And cats.
