So you care for them pretty much the same way as a chicken then? Feed, water, grit, shelter and a perch? What are the special ins and outs of them? And how long do they live for / lay eggs efficiently for?

There are so many different kinds of quails, which ones where you considering? :)

I have coturnix (Japanese) quail. They are friendly, lay a lot of eggs, and don't need large space.

Not sure Livi. I am just getting my chicken set up finished and was thinking about quail as well. A type that would lay a good bit of eggs and is also tasty as I absolutely love eating qual would be good. I was just wondering what their general upkeep was like. I mean is it pretty much like chickens and other birds. Just make sure they have feed and water and thats it?

Then I would recommend coturnix (japenese) quails, maybe a bigger line like the ones they call jumbo :)

Coturnix are the best quail to start out with and lay more eggs then you will know what to do with. Very easy to keep and do not perch or use a ramp. Always provide oyster shell and a dust bath made with sand and Diotamaceous earth mixed. You will see them eat some of the sand mixture but that is ok.
