We got what we thought was an Australorp pullet 2 months ago, but now suspect that "she" is a "he"- saddle feathers, tail has a few long feathers, suspicious bumps on legs that could be the beginning of spurs. No crowing yet. No egg either. Our flock consists of Skippy, a lame Buff Orpington rooster and one Welsummer hen, plus the newcomer. So far the new chicken is being subservient to Skippy but worry that as he matures there will be problems. Poor Skippy was at the bottom of the rooster hierarchy at his last home and don't want that to happen again. Question: Is it better to get some more hens so that they can each have a harem or will that just cause friction? How many hens would be a good number? We allow them to free range during the day and everyone goes into the coop at night to sleep- all3 on the same perch. Don't want to have to get rid of Carmine but will do so if necessary. Should I just wait and see if the boys fight before doing anything? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
