Morning, Duck Folk,

Just a quick post to see if anyone has experienced this with adult ducks.

I plan to get her to the vet early this afternoon, but wanted to post about it in case there are some suggestions.

I realize that it could be something caught in her throat, or a respiratory problem. I also wondered if it could be some kind of injury, or gapeworm.

No other symptoms. She had no voice for a few hours, now has a little, hoarse voice. She doesn't quack, really, she has a very low pitched quiet honk normally. Now it's quieter, and shorter.

I gave her vitamins, electrolytes and probiotics in the water overnight, since I don't know what else may help.

Will post back when I can.

And, we are back from the vet. The report:

Nothing obvious going on with Carmella. Dr. felt her belly, neck, legs, listened to her lungs (nice and clear), looked down her throat - - - way down her throat - - - did a fecal exam. No signs of parasites, or upper respiratory problems, she weighs four pounds, good body condition, eyes bright, all that.

The fecal sample will be sent to another lab that can run more refined tests, and we will hear back tomorrow afternoon. Meanwhile, I will continue with immune support (vitamins, etc.) and watch her. If the fecal shows parasites, we will treat for that. If she shows any sign there might be infection, I will get a prescription for Clavamox. It could be viral, and pass in a few more days, or it could be she has some kind of irritation caused by eating something that scratched her throat.

For now, she is back in the flock, behaving normally.

Thanks, y'all.

On the way home I stopped at Labieniec's feed store to get mealworms, and when the clerk saw the ducks, she recognized them! She is one of their fans - used to see them at the shelter, then missed them when they were adopted out. So it was a nice little reunion.

Gee whiz. My ducks have their own fan club. How about that!!!

I want to be part of their fan club!

This may be totally out there and absurd, but I did read a story about a lady's lady duck turning into a drake. Her voice changed and everything... Maybe Carmella is turning into a Carter.
