Sorry, it's not funny, I know. Our last house the previous owners used scrap orange and yellow carpet to fashion a sunray design that covered the entire floor. Then they painted the walls orange and blue. We were in Wyoming so we called it the Denver Broncos room!

About the berber - I have a big dog too, and the two little Bostons are as hard or harder on things than the big one is.

Thanks for the help!

And you can always use throw rugs on a hard floor..I have a dog run made out of "airline cable"
(It doesn't get used by dogs anymore cause we got a stockade fence for them)
I use curtain hooks to hang the rugs out on that and then use a pressure washer

Our 1900yr old home had beautiful hardwood floors throughout. Now mind you I loved the look of the hardwood floors, but with animals hardwoods are not good! Not only can they get scratched up but also the dog hair is a constant cleaning project for you! I'd stick to carpet, not berber though!!

I use only GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract) to clean my big rugs.

One year I ran out of GSE after having cleaned 1/2 of my big living room rug. I cleaned the other half using the typical liquid that comes with the carpet cleaner.

One half of that rug still looks like new.

I have GSE in a spray bottle (30-35 drops and bottled water). I use it to spot-clean. It has, so far, gotten everything out.

I use this brand because it is 3x (cheaper in the long-run)

we had the same problem with carpet....but then we met a friend who owned a carpet cleaning business....well he said what was happening was the left over soap was acting like a trap fr all the dirt...use straight hot water with a little vinegar in it (we had pet stains) and rince eack rom till there is no more bubbles in the water...

so off the the grocery store i went to rent a cleaner and low and behold my carpets came up great...i then had them treated with a scotchguard type product...i added another 5 years to my carpets

My DH owened a carpet cleaning business and he hate berber, it does run very easy, and dogs will run it in the long run!
I have seen people use different hardwoods in different rooms ans it looked great. It defined each room!
Maybe running the pattern a different way.
Just because it is hard wood doesn't mean it has to match!!!
I want to do a bamboo floor!
Out carpet is trashed too, but it has been 10 years! It doesn't clean anymore and the spots come back!
We have never used anything but my DH professional cleaner either, so stains that are sticky will come back at some point and worse if you use a sudsy cleaner!!
I say if you want hard wood go for it. Try some samples and see if you like it,it wouldn't hurt!

Great advice! I always wondered if the soap was what was attracting the dirt. I'll try that with the vinegar. It didn't smell?

i did not use a lot of vinegar..it smelled for a few hours but in my sons room where the dogs seem to like best it came up great..no more pee smell..after i stopped getting bubbles with the viengar water i did one more pass with clear water....

it was a lot of work but work over a few thousand to re-do carpet...i use a lil elbow grease..thanks...lol
