Carrots

My beloved wife brings home a large bag of carrots last night. Her kids at school had them for snack but did not eat them all. There are the little carrots about 2-3 inches long that have been cut and shaved. They are just small carrots about the size of my pinky finger.

Can the chickens eat them? I was not sure it they could break pieces off by pecking them so I boiled them until they were about 1/2 soft.

Did I waste my time by boiling them?

My chickens don't like carrots too much, cooked carrots they will eat. But its not their favorite treat. I do think any treats I give my chickens, what they don't eat the deer, rabbits, and squirrels will.

I find that my chickens prefer carrot peelings to lots of other food. I nuke them for a minute in a plastic bag, allow to cool, and out they go.

Carrots are on the "Treats Chart" so I think the issue of their suitability as a "treat" has been throughly "digested" here on the forum

.

My only concern is that they are less than 1% protein so it is fairly easy to short the birds on that necessary nutrient if they eat too many carrots.

hi , not sure about carrrots , but they do like baby snakes !!! i found two today anf "fed" them to the 6 week old brown eggers that i have waiting to be in their coop ( stll building it ) and they attacked them and quiclky made several meals out of them , i think they just like to play with them , too. LOL before that DH , said i think the chickens are bored , so i had already givenm them some sdtrawberry treats and a cabbage head to play with !!!! thay had a fun day.

Carrots are good food for chickens-start out slow. Nuke them to soften them a bit or grate them.
