Our local newspaper has taken to printing a list each year of the farmers and the subsidies they receive, which includes everything including for failures. So people think that farmers have so much money. One year my dad was in the top 20 of over 100 farmers but it was because of crop failure. They dont take into account what he lost that year. Not to mention its basically a 2 man operation with 3 20 year old tractors. I always tell people, why dont you go to work 60+ hours a week for 3 months (your own gas, food, maintance, seed, fertilizer), then about 5 months from now I will decide if I liked your work and pay you whatever I want. How many people would take that deal? My dad had to sell off a couple hundred acres a few years ago just to pay off bills so he could try to make a profit. The thing is, we also lost on that deal because that was some of the prime hunting land so it took food out of the freezer.
