Yes, oil does become sticky. I use shortening the first time I season them, but after that I cook bacon and while the bacon is cooking it seems to season them a second time. But if I don't like the way the skillet is cooking, I'll season a third time with shortening and they'll be good to go. I usually only have to season 3 times with my newer ones, the ones that I got from a store. The biggest skillet that I have, is from a yard sale, paid $4 for it. Its 12inches and completely smooth on the inside, its VERY old. I love that one, I don't even really need to season it. It doesn't get rusty, it also never seems to let anything stick to it. Thank you Stumpy, for your two cents.Just putting in my two cents here. I never use oil, only shortening, on my iron skillets. I've found that oil tends to become sticky.
