Hi guys just found this site and could do with a bit of advice, I live in England and have just got some birds but ever since I have been constantly chasing cats out of my back yard !! I mean every five minutes. Anyway I was going to put up a homemade electric fence, has anyone done this ? I was going to use a car battery and some proper electric fence cord. The question I have is if I run one cable from the positive and one from the negative of the battery and installed them on top of a my 6 foot wooden fence would I need to put up a third line that is earthed ? or would the cats get a shock on top of a 6 foot fence with just the two cables ?

If you do go with the electric fence, I would not reccomend using a car battery. That is dangerous.
Just get a fence charger made for the size area you want to enclose, and one that pulses and is made for chickens, horses, dogs and cats. It won't kill the animal, just shock them enough they will want to stay away from it.

All you will succeed in doing is melting some wire and ruining a battery.

Actually littlegrey hen I do to. I never understood why people think it's ok to let their cats just run around. It's true I have never had a cat kill an adult bird but I really don't appreciate the scratching up and pooping in my flower beds and most of all I hate tom cats marking my property as their territory, god that stuff stinks.
