Cat Found a Baby Rabbit!

Wild bunnies are difficult to bottle raise! But it CAN be done. Pet shops, WalMart and even some grocery stores carry the bottles and milk replacer. But it's usually easier to feed them with a syringe or eyedropper. You can ask your phamacist for one They use them for giving babies meds. (plunger thingy = hypodermic syringe without needle)
the 2 most important things about feeding:

1) don't let them get it in the lungs! if they don't suck (and they won't at first) do it a drop at a time. very slowly so they swallow. if you put it too deep in their throat, they will breathe it instead of swallow, then they either drown, or die of pneumonia

2) feed them often! much better to feed little and often then ty to feed too much at once. normally they nurse every couple of hours until they start eating solids. once they get where they are taking in a good amount, then you can feed them less often

Bottle feeding ANYTHING is not easy, but it's worth it when you see something that would have died growing and thriving

Just an FYI - I have a rehab license (in maine) and those are domestic rabbits. Wild rabbits are not black.

Best suggestion - see if a local shelter has a nursing rabbit. Rabbits have a lot of fat in their milk due to the rate of growth.

Also - check out the house rabbit society web page - contact them if possible. I don't have the recipe on me - but there is one that is based on goats milk which is better than kittens milk.

The rabbits ABSOLUTELY need antibiotics - even siliva in the eye can cause a pasturella infection.

Your local vet should (in theory) be able to help too - might even know of someone with a nursing rabbit
