CAT in run!

I have 7 cats here(5 are 6 month old kittens) and they seem to be fine with the chickens. I have only had one that tried to attack the chickens. He was about 3 months old and he went and jumped on my white rock roo, it was so funny but now he KNOWS if I am nice to the chickens they are nice to me. All my cats love to go in the coop with me and hang out with the chickens.

I would just watch it for a few days and really watch when the chicks are born.

I have two early spring tom cats that both love the chickens. At first I was concerned but, they seem to have reached an understanding. You leave us alone and we leave you alone type of thing. Now the one can lay right tight to the run fence without being picked and the other has even followed me into the coop (although I try to keep him out-he's fast) without problems.

I lost 24 chickens in one day to neighbors cat. Killed them for sport.

Caught another of the same neighbors cats stalking my full grown goose. This cat was huge for a so called tame cat and could have easily taken down a full grown goose.

Now, both cats met with unfortunate demises, died of "lead poisoning", and I won't let a cat anywhere on my place. I've lost my last bird because of irresponsible idiots that won't control their pets.

Now I'm hunting the feral cats that are killing anything that moves. ie: rabbits, songbirds etc.

maybe you should move...

my roo doesnt do anything.. but fertalize

A bb can break the skin and really hurt the cat. If you're going to shoot a cat use a real gun, it's more humane. I'm not for shooting or killing anything but most people will agree that it's better to kill a "pest" rather than injure it and let it die slow and painful.

Nothing against you at all Lacy. A lot of people don't realize that a bb can do a lot of damage weither you meant to or not.

Back to the topic though, Carrie from all these posts I think it just really depends on the cat. You never know what an animal is going to do just like you never know about what a person is going to do. Is the cat still around?

Hi, there is a stranger cat who lurks around my chickens from time to time too. I don't know who owns him but he visits out by the coop and the chickens are not afraid of him, nor is he afraid of them. He just looks likes he's being nosy. Maybe he is looking for eggs,,,I don't know but he never seems to be in attack mode towards my birds. However,,,if this changes,,,I have a nice pellet gun waiting

The other day I was in the coop and my calico female cat came bounding in. The hens didn't pay her much attention, but the roo was a statue. She weaved her way thru the hens and wandered around smelling the hay bales outside of their coop. I decided to let her get her curiousity out and let her check everything out. (She's been watching them since they were babies) After 10 minutes or so I scooped her up and brought her back into the house. The roo never moved the whole time - just kept an evil eye on her. Good boy.

I have a stray that comes around ... the chickens set up a HUGE fuss when he comes anywhere near the yard. That makes me wonder if he ever tried to attack them.

Even though he looks very similar to one of my cats, the chickens can tell the difference. My cats come and go from front yard to back, and the chickens mostly ignore them. But if that stray comes around, half of them scream now.

Strange ... a very large lab that sometimes roams our neighborhood came in the front yard while I was out with the chickens last week and I never heard a sound from them. Guess they don't see HIM as a threat?

When I kept parrots and such, we were always careful with cats because the claws carry so much bacteria. You know how a cat scratch almost always gets infected to some degree? I was always told that the scratch alone could be fatal to parrots. I'm not positive that's true, but I never took the chance. I don't know if chickens are stronger, or what. (Though considering what the ducks EAT, I think they must be immune from infection!)

If it a stray cat I will pump the bb gun up about 4 times that way it might go in a at close range but like if our cats catch a wild moude or rat i will only pump it up 1 time so it dont go in and they will drop the animal... I dont shoot to kill if I wanted to do that i would get the 22.
