Cat killing my chickens

I'm not sure if you're looking for stories or advice, but I accidentally caught a feral cat in a live trap intended to catch a racoon with a couple hotdogs, if you're looking for advice on how to catch it.


Story wise, the cats I had problems with were my own cats. One brought a 4 week old in the house to show off that he'd been a good hunter. Thankfully the chick was fine, and the cat dropped him. This cat learned over the course of a year trying to pounce chicks that it was unacceptable. (I chased him off my birds so many times)

A different time, and a different cat, caught and killed one of my 9 week olds. I saw him and chased him all over the yard yelling at him. He was smart enough to stay out of my reach and eventually hid in the neighbors barn. I didn't want to trespass so I didn't go in. He didn't come home for 3 days and returned with a limp. I think he might have set off a rat trap in the neighbors barn. Not sure, he eventually got better, and never touched my chickens again.

Now the adult chickens actively chase the cats and the cats are afraid of them. I do still have chicks around, but usually I have a broody with them. I haven't lost any chickens to my cats in a very long time, and aside from them watching 'chicken tv' laying on the driveway, my cats leave them alone. They don't stalk the chickens or get into pounce mode with them anymore.

A cat in the neighborhood had already killed 2 chickens in different yards. Today my 2 hens were in my fenced in yard and this sabe cat killed one. As many of you know chickens are pets to some of us. The owners of the cat knew that this cat had killed other chickens and vowed to re home her. They didn’t snd now she killed my hen. This seems like unnecessary and cruel pain and suffering to let a cat roam knowing that they kill. In fact the owners of the cat sent a text to me saying that they have chickens too but that they keep them in a run so they are safe from their cats.

I've read a lot of stories and articles about cats killing chickens. I've not had that problem (thankfully), but my 4 cats are indoor cats, and coyotes have done away with the feral population.

I just posted about one of my hens being killed this afternoon in my fenced bin back yard. I have it in a security camera!! The cat is a known chicken killer and the owners have not kept it inside, re homed it out out her down. This is cruel to the neighborhood chickens their owners and especially the children whose pets are being mutilated in broad daylight

I wouldn't lose a moment's sleep over trapping that cat and dropping it 10 miles away. Of course, I have popped a cat in the butt with a pellet gun before too. Didn't kill him, and he hasn't been in my yard since, and even when he sees me on the street in broad daylight, he takes off running. I guess I made my point.

I have read other stories of chickens chasing cats. I think my chickens are so domesticated that they would not chase a cat. They have lived in perfect harmony with my lab since day one! I don’t have any idea how to trap a cat but I’m going to learn. Thank you

How do you trap a cat. Is it legal

Same trap you use for a raccoon. Doesn't hurt them. I'm not even concerned with legal. Your neighbor isn't.

I caught my raccoon the very first night I put the trap out. Just make sure you put the bait far enough in that you don't smush his tail with the drop plate.
