Here, there, and everywhere...
This is a looong story, but the gist of it is that I have a 15+ year old ex tom cat who has Feline Aids.
Because of this I was advised to never have him vaccinated again, not even for rabies, because it could kill him. So since we found out back in 2004, we haven't vaxed him ever again, and he improved and is very a healthy robust cat, nuetered, etc. He gets kitty vitamins and some dietary supplements for his FIV.
Since he grew up outdoors he still very much wants to go outside. But I don't normally let him. Maybe twice a year for a good romp and to sunbathe and eat grass. He's old and it makes him happy and he'd been through hell and back before I rescued him.
Last week, I caved and let him out. I watched him as he zoomed through the front yard like a young kitten, rolled around, munched grass, and then took a short nap in a sunbeam. I then gathered him up and brought him inside.
By the next morning he was limping on his front right paw. I checked it out but nothing looked out of the ordinary, I checked the pad, nothing. I chalked it up to kitty arthritis and let it be, he is old afterall.
By the next day he would put no weight on it and was very swollen. I now run into a big issue. Because he has no shots, no vet will touch him without first vaxing him, which would be a giant shock to his system.
I still have found no wound on his paw, or on his leg, his shoulder, head, body, anywhere! Clearly something happened to him though. Whether it happened outside or inside I have no idea. I have soaked the paw in cool water to try and bring down the swelling. I have given him kitty antibiotics given to me by someone in the local animal inner workings who knows I purposely do not vaccinate him but who is not an actual vet, just an extremely knowlegable vet tech who has run a cat rescue for over 30 years.
It's not getting any better. In fact this morning, I found two small sores had opened up on the top of the paw, where I am guessing he has been licking.
Should I put a kitty cone on him? Should I lightly wrap it and put some neosporin in it?
Does anyone even know what it sounds like it could be? A bit or sting? A burn? Electrocution? I've been wracking my brain trying to think of what it could be.
No bashing okay. I am very animal savvy but I have never had to deal with swelling on an animal before. If it were simple cut or anything else I could treat it with my eyes closed, but this is different.
I have called my own vet who has told me that they would see him, only after I got him about 3 different shots which the vet has warned me could kill him with the AIDS.
As a last resort I would do it, but I need to try anything I can at home first.

Is that the same vet? Are you talking to the actual vet or staff? Staff can be a bit difficult, perhaps you can explain it to the doctor him/herself. I email mine!

How long, on what type antibiotic? Could it be a ruptured abcess?

In your situation, I would apply hot compresses, to draw any gunk or junk out, then press gently to express the yuck if there is any. Then neosporin w/out lidocaine and leave it be. If the licking gets carried away, bandage and/or the cone.

Good luck!

Just in case it is a bee sting/snake bite/scorpion sting, I would give him a benadryl. It shouldn't affect his disease process. Maybe try 1/2 dose if you normally give him lower doses of the meds. There could be a sting that you couldn't see. When my cat got stung by a scorpion, you couldn't see where he was stung until the swelling went down. Then, there was a little scab.

Does he feel like he's got a fever? My cat's ears will get really hot when he has a fever. I used to take him in, now I just give him a little dot of Bute, which is a horse medicine, but also what they use at the vet's to bring down his fever.

Feel free to PM me if you like.

I'm shocked that I've heard so many people on here say their vets wont touch an unvaccinated animal. It's not like they are going to get FIV from him or that it's going to infest the clinic.
Try soaking the foot in warm epsom salt soaks two to three times a day if you can't find a vet. He would probably benefit from antibiotics, I would just guess it was an abscess from the description.
Epsom salt soaks are pretty benign so they definitely wont hurt to do.

This is exactly what I ended up doing for our cat Freddy. He had no obvious puncture holes until I soaked his foot. I soaked it 3x's a day for 15min each time for about a week and a half in as hot of water that he could stand.

This happened to my dog once. I lived in a house when I was in college, and I was unable to mow the backyard grass. I don't know what kind of grass it was, but it wasn't the St. Augustine or bermuda that I'm used to. When my dog went out there, one of the seed heads went into the skin between his toes. It dug in deeper and deeper and the paw swelled up and he limped. I had no idea what was causing the swelling, I couldn't see an entry hole, but he chewed it up pretty well after that. It was driving him crazy, and obviously painful. I took him to the vet, they did a little doggie surgery on him, got the thing out, and put bandages on his paw. The vet said that particular grass will burrow into the skin till it reaches bone, and it will wreak havoc.
If your dog is going in the same grass he's always gone in, this is not likely to be the problem. I'm just throwing it out there because who would have thought of that???

Would he let you wrap it with some ichthimal (sp?) ointment? Maybe that could draw out whatever is causing the problem.
Also, if he is running a fever, he shouldn't be vaccinated anyway. I don't understand how the vet could insist on vaccinating an ill/injured animal - especially if he wouldn't be staying at the vet (surgery or boarding).
Is there any chance he could have been bitten by another cat while outside? I am thinking about cat bite abcesses. What about a spider bite? If possible, try to talk your vet into sending home some antibiotics and soak his poor foot or wrap it in that oinment (that stuff works wonders, got catus spines out of my DD's foot when she was a toddler.)I found it for sale at TSC.
Also, should he quit eating - lamb baby food works really well on my puny kitties.
BTW - great job keeping am FIV + kitty going strong all those years, you're doing something right. Give him a snuggle for me.
Best wishes and tell him to get well soon!

Thanks guys! The two little sores on the top of the foot are what I believe the problem was. As soon they they opened up, the swelling in his paw is dramatically down, and he is starting to use the paw again, I cleaned it and soaked it and then applied the Neo.
I think he'll be just fine.
