Probably depends on your cat. Our chickens annoy our cat so much and he wants nothing to do with them. He was interested in the chicks when it was one on one, but when they ganged up on him he chickened out.

I'm confused (my normal state of mind

Depends on that cat. My house cats are used to the babies being around and they don't hurt them. I have an outside that just showed up and I was about to trap him but he proved his worth by rescuing Turk from a Road Runner and several others from an owl. He hasn't hurt them, he is great with the babies, but other cats I wouldn't trust until they proved themselves.
I'd stay with them if you are going to try and put them together. Just sit where you can see if the cat goes into stalking or "playing" mode. Sometimes they think the younger birds are toys and when the they run or fight the hunting instinct comes out, it's only natural, that is what cats do.
