Cats as Pest Control in Winter

Histoplasma capsulatum spores are inhaled or ingested when contaminated soil is disturbed, such as when a cat scratches at dirt used to cover its own waste, or when the cat comes into contact with contaminated bird droppings, including poultry droppings.

Wonders if chickens can get toxoplasmosis from cat poop?

I don't think so. We can, but cats with toxoplas. will only shed the little critters for three weeks, not forever. Most people are infected when gardening without gloves on, or handling meat in the kitchen without being careful enough.
It's not a nice disease though.

"Chickens are considered one of the most important hosts in the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii infection because they are an efficient source of infection for cats that excrete the environmentally resistant oocysts and because humans may become infected with this parasite after eating undercooked infected chicken meat. A very high prevalence of the Toxoplasma gondii parasite was found in chickens raised in backyards (up to 100%) and free-range organic (30-50%) establishments."

I meant that I don't believe that chickens get sick from this parasite. Almost any bird or mammal can acquire the cysts in their muscles, which when eaten, produce the next stage of their life cycle. Yuck!
Cooking any meat is essential to avoid this parasite, and some others, and bacterial infections too. Sadly, prions aren't destroyed by cooking.
I've had tartar steak, and raw sushi, and never again! Parasitology in college cured me
of wanting to eat that stuff, ever again.
