A few months ago we were having a terrible problem with squirrels getting into our chicken feeder. I was seeing 5-6 squirrels at a time like it was a buffet. We decided to get an outdoor kitten to group up with the chickens, so he wouldn't bother them but would do some damage to the squirrel population. Enter Boogie, my 4 month old black male kitty. We got him at 8 weeks and introduced him to the chickens slowly. He now sort of thinks he's a chicken. He eats snack with them, he sleeps on top of the run of my smaller chicks- but today takes the cake. It's raining, so I run outside to check the nest boxes (my older chickens have yet to lay) and who do I find curled up in a nest box sleeping? Boogie didn't make any move to leave either, just meowed, stretched and returned to his comfy position.
I can't shut up the coop, the chickens won't have a place to lay. Can't lock the cat up during the day, the squirrels will return. I have 6 large nest boxes- should they share?

Boogie and Bea

This is too cute. As a cat owner and lover, I would leave a nest box for Boogie. I'm sure 5 will be plenty for the girls and he can keep an eye out for rodents and other critters.

Our 7-year-old tom (who is an occasionally -successful birder) likes hanging out with the chickens. Except when Blackie (our white crested black polish) decides she doesn't like having Bono around. She will chase him around the yard, growling and pecking at him. He doesn't fight back (we made sure the dog and cats knew that the baby peepers were members of the family and not lunch when we got them in Feb.) It's nice when they get along (or get along well enough).
