hi can chickens protect themselves from cats

For most full size chickens... they don't care about cats.

Bantams or chicks, I would definitely be leery.

Some people have had issues... My chooks walk by a (Ferrell) cat and stick their tongues out.

I suspect like so many other things, each situation will be individual.

Kinda ... depends on both the chicken(s) (age, breed, health, and attitude) and ... the same for the cat ...

Some chickens, have run off some cats ... and, some chickens have been killed by some cats!

Guessing you're talking about domestic house cats too, compared to feral, or even wild cats ...

I find a cat will take chicks (youngsters), several cats will try to take a fully grown bird

I used to get alot of cats in my garden but since I've had chickens they don't seem to come in anymore. This is domestic moggies not wild cats. I wouldn't trust them around chicks or smaller birds though.

Domestic and feral are in the same category for me.

Wild cats is a whole other story... all bets are off!

Feral cats tend to be hungrier
