Caught a skunk in a live trap!?!?!?! HELP!

i agree with the tarp, preferably a plastic one not able to be sprayed through

hold it up high, making as large a wall as possible with it (being sure it is touching the ground). when close enough, lay it over the top.

once that's done, i don't know what you'd do with it. i know they've got some sharp teeth and large attitudes

i was driving a 40-ton end dump (dump truck), and one turned and bounced its rear end at me. they must think that hole shoots bullets

That is just crazy...I have never heard of something so ridiculous. I personally am not wasting my time to drive anywhere with the chicken killers.

OP - I would use a tarp or something. Avoid getting sprayed if you can...most often when you shoot them they spray anyway.

When we killed a (clearly) rabid raccoon here, we were able to just hand the corpse over for rabies/distemper testing, instead of trapping.. The procedure is pretty insane, but all they need is brain matter, so if it were a concern, I'd just offer up the body/just the head.
That said, if it doesn't look rabid, I'm not going to decapitate something, or make it go on an unneeded stressful journey just to get killed at the pound, I'll just kill it as quick and cleanly as I can.

I'm with the plastic Tarp-as-a-shield crowd. If you were smart enough to have rope tied to the trap ahead of time, you can then carry the covered trap to a pond and toss it in, pull trap out later by the rope. No getting sprayed.

I have caught them and can tell you that a blanket/tarp over the cage prevents them from spraying on you. When you move the cage keep the cage covered. Wear heavy leather gloves. Move them gently so as to not disturb them any more than they are already. I would never shoot them as they are a furbearer by definition of our state DNR and that would be taking an animal out of season subject to a fine. I have heard that if dropped in a pond or stock tank they will drown and not spray. Then they can be safely removed from the trap without getting sprayed and it will never find its way back to your place.

I found myself in the same situation last year. I was going for a groundhog and got a surprise. I am sorry you got sprayed. The DOW told me to use the sheet method, but I was way too leery when he said 'it shouldn't spray you.' I do know that when I was doing research on how to get rid of it, I found that skunks have a limited amount of spray and then they have to recharge. You may be safe to do away with it without getting sprayed again. In our town it is illegal to trap them or move them or kill them, which I think is ridiculous but apparently that's what you get living in the suburbs.

Here if you catch the animal you deal with it:/ we called and they said it was our problem not theirs:(

i braved up walked over tied a rope to the cage (got sprayed 3 times) hooked it to my truck pulled it out back and had my grandpa shoot it...
edit: i wish i would have looked on here before my mom made me get it out of here... it would have saved me from taking 10 showers:)
