Actually in most states if having chickens is a nuisance complaint it could be a civil charge. Zoning violations can be misdemeanors and sometimes carry fines of $100 or more. One thing to consider is that most of these infractions are done by the day. In other words, each day you are in violation is a new and separate offense. I always notify violators and give them so many days to rectify the offense (never chickens). If they don't fix the violations I then contact the county attorney and he'll send a letter which usually does the trick.

One thing to keep in mind even where chickens are legal is you may need a permit to construct a coop. This would be especially true in a flood plain.

I really think they should be legal ALL OVER !! For heaven sake petco.com is even selling chicken products like feed and cute coops for yards !! I mean you can get a barking dog that can catch rabies and tear up your fence ect... But you cant keep two or three hens that pose basically no health risk as long as the coop is kept clean and they are vaccinated. And believe me feral cats are already a big issue and yet we are still allowed to have cats !! Why can't we keep a few hens in our back yards i mean they do not bark or make lots of noise and here where i live you can keep up to 200 flying pigeons ( MUCH higher disease risk ) in a yard bigger than 500sq feet i mean why cant we keep chickens !?! And you can't keep rabbits either

I AM going to change these ridiculous Ordinances and laws i mean 2min away from me is a horse boarding center and they have HUNDREDS of chickens !!

Sorry had to let off some steam i just want to be able to keep my chooks outside!! Though i don't see a problem as my neighbors like them so i might move them out in spring.

well, i'm illegal, and i own 4 sweet, quiet hens. AND....since it's going so well, i'm-a-hatchin out some eggs AND getting more chicks this spring! Whoo-hoo! i'll probably have a total of 12-14 chickens when it's all said and done. i figure IF i get caught, i'll take a few of my favorites (of course i'm sure they'll ALL be my favorites) but i'll take 3 or 4 and make a room for them upstairs in my spare room....bring them out to free range every day....cuz i just can NOT be chickenless! i would die of heartbreak! dogs are WAY noiser and poop WAY more....i'm a dog lover too, i just think the rules are KOO-KOO!

Don't be show'em how great chickens are and let them know that all of us are illegal. If you lose try again, your not alone i'm afraid two trust me. There are lots of people trying to get the law changed, everybody win or loses.
