Has anyone put cayenne pepper in their hens water to get them to lay throughout the winter? I've heard it works but I'm not sure if I should give it to my girls or not??

The problem with laying in winter has to do with the reduced daylight hours. If you add light before dawn or after dusk they should lay like normal. I haven't heard of the pepper in the water to help laying but I have heard of using it as a natural dewormer.

Lots of pro's and con's about this. I put pepper in their food last year don't know if it did any good but it did no harm.

I have used cayenne pepper to jump-star my Brody hens to start laying again. I put it in scrambled eggs for them. I have always seen results in two days. This has always been over the summer though.

I put cayenne pepper in their water in the winter as I was told it aids in keeping them warm, Chicken have no capsacine reseptors but it is suppose to increase the flow of blood to keep them warm. I did do black pepper in their food and did notice a more consistent production in eggs. But I also add light in the coop,(increase to 14 hrs.) come January to get them laying again. I give them a couple of months off to recover from moulting
and laying, but I cant last myself without fresh eggs.LOL

Havnt heard of that but I doubt it would hurt anything. For them keeping warm in the winter my chickens drink warm water as it helps it from freezing right away anyways. lol.

If all you are trying to do is heat them up put out cracked corn otherwise give them more light but if you are going to put cayenne pepper in their water why not put some beer in there also and see if it gives you egg shells with different colors

I was given this sage wisdom but an older gentleman chicken farmer who has been raising chickens for eggs for years. He said it helps keep them warm by getting the blood flowing which helps with egg production. He always has eggs. We used to buy from him before we got our own ladies.
