Cayenne Pepper It Really Gets Those Hens Laying

Does anyone know WHY this works?
No one knows, because it doesn't. Any reports are anecdotal, not scientific.
It seems some people who have heard this, do so when they get impatient. The feeding of the hot peppers coincides with point of lay and they are convinced. The pullets would have started to lay with or without the capsacin.
It is a shame when people start grasping at straws and ultimately perpetuate an old wives tale.

It certainly won't hurt them and may very well be nutritionally beneficial but to kick start egg production? Not!

The fact that the reports are “anecdotal “ means absolutely nothing, as far as whether it does or doesn’t work. Don’t be ridiculous.

Science has shown capsaicin doesn’t effect chickens. So, it’s gotta be about the nutrients. Which have as much effect as sheer coincidence.
So..... feeding new laying flock cayenne will give you enough patience through the placebo effect to wait a proper amount of time to get everyone up and running.

Now. Who raised this beat to death thread from the dead????

They did. ^

Hmmm... were these younger hens that hadn't starting laying yet? If so, the timing sounds like it simply coincided with them maturing and beginning to lay.
There is no evidence that hot peppers activate or increase egg production (studies have been done, and none have found any connection). That said, peppers are healthy, and since hens have very few taste buds, they can be added to feed (like everything, in moderation). Black pepper, for example, is anti-inflammatory, and is considered a healthy addition. Bonus of feeding peppers is squirrels and other rodents will be less likely to eat the chicken feed. AND, high-carotene foods will tint the yolks red! But still won't make your hens lay more.

No evidence that it does, but some herbs and spices can have health benefits, so maybe alleviating underlying issues (peppers dont "cause" birds to lay, but if they help with worms, etc they may pave way for better general health which in turn could mean better egg production).
