We have 3 ducklings that have hatched from a nest.

Two are strong. One was outside the nest when we checked next day and very cold.
Put it under a heat light till it seemed OK.

We returned the duckling to its mother. All looked OK until today when we checked. The same duckling
was left out in the rain by its mother.

It has been very shaky and is now under another light to warm it up. We will look after it ourselves.

The thing that concerns me is this duckling has a growth around or on its anus. It is about one quarter
of an inch round and looks like a twisted mass of feathers. Also when I looked, there was a mass of
maggot eggs around the same clump. Clean them away of course.

The colour is that of a very dark tea. Similar to the colour of its feathers.
I tried gently washing with warm water and also pulling on it gently. It wont budge.

The other two ducklings are fluffed up with a heavy down one would expect.

This one has feathers but very little down and not as fluffy. It is also much smaller
than the others.

Any ideas what it might be. Will it drop off on its own or something to be concerned about.

Thanks.

This could be a tough one. I don't know what it is, but the presence of maggots indicates the possibility of dead or dying tissue (flies seem attracted to that). Keep it warm and dry, away from flies, see if it will eat and drink.

The mother may have rejected it due to serious health problems. The mass may be a tumor, or could be some other problem.

If it will drink, put some vitamins in the water.

I hope someone who has seen this kind of thing will check in.

Duckling update.

The growth is pretty much gone now. I think it was where the yolk sack was attached.

Duckling is eating and pooping nicely.

Male duck was removed from duck run and placed with the chickens.
Mean thing was pecking at the other two ducklings and tossing them about.

Cheers.

Shewee! Some drakes are just . . . mean.

So relieved to hear the baby's doing better!

Please check in to let us know how everyone is doing! Thanks for joining us!
