Cayuga Ducks?

The picture on the first page of that link....are those the blues? Do they have any other colored sheen in sunlight? They are really gorgeous.

Cayugas from the feed store are going to be hatchery birds and they will be nothing like the Cayugas that you saw at Crossroads.

Show ducks are not that expensive. Perhaps $10 for a duckling instead of $4. That $10 duckling can live for years, looking drop dead gorgeous in your yard all that time, and giving you a lot of enjoyment. You'd pay more for a video game than for a pair of quality ducklings.

Some of the hatchery Cayugas are simply black ducks. They aren't the brilliant beetle sheen green of show Cayugas. While they are nice ducks and good pets, they are not going to look the same as what you saw at Crossroads and probably not the same as the birds you see on the Internet poultry webpages.

TOTALLY agree!

I would love to see pictures of some blue adults if you come across any, looked at the link Kevin565 gave but didn't have pics of adults. I have never seen blue before. sounds dreamy

I believe those are the blues. I'm not sure about the sunlight thing. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

Yah.. I think I would have a heart attack if I DID find somebody around here.... but I have been lucky because my hatchery Cayugas are still beautiful, with those lovely beetle-green, blue and some purples in their feathers. In the sun they are magnificent!

I got my babies at a local feed store (hatchery birds) and they have all the pretty blue and purple, and of course green. I was disappointed for a while thinking I got what I paid for, but they are really gorgeous now.

I didn't notice anyone mention what happens to the Cayugas as they age. They're lovely black feathers turn white. We have a 10 year old Cayuga named Sally who is gorgeous!

Her beak and feet are still black but most of her feathers are now white. She's just like us as we age. I brought her into the house yesterday as I fear she is succumbing to old age. She has been a wonderful surrogate mom to many many babies, including chickens, ducks, geese, and guineas.

She'll live out the rest of her days, months, years, whatever inside as a pampered duck.

Laurie

This is Sally 2 years ago.
