I have been doing lots of research lately, and was conflicted on what breed of duck to get, Pekin or Cayuga? I live in a neighborhood with relatively close neighbors, and not sure which breed is a better backyard bird based on experience. I have heard that the Cayuga is very quiet, and also heard it was just as loud as any other kind duck. I am looking for a quirky personality, that is very outgoing. I know that Cayugas can be skittish, but that really can be the case with any bird. We have an decent sized, fenced in yard. I don’t think sound will be as important because we haved chickens before and are getting a goose as well. Our neighbors are very laid back about animals, as they have four dogs, six rabbits, a pig, and chicks . We will be raising our ducks from eggs and are planning to get the eggs soon, just not sure what kind yet. I am also open to any other breed suggestions, Cayuga, and Pekin are just my main choices as of now.

Getting a pekin for a pet duck is like having a Cornish cross as a pet chicken. Its just a bad idea. They are meat birds, bread to be slaughtered at 8 weeks. So many ppl come on here posting about their pekin with health problems. Don't let that be you.

Hello! :frow

Pekins are about the loudest duck, just right behind Calls, so if noise is a concern in your area I would definitely recommend not getting a female Pekin, of course, personality may vary with each bird. Pekin's due often suffer from various problems, two being wet feather and leg problems, they are quite high maintenance birds especially as they age. I've never had Cayuga's so I can't really comment on their personality, I know that many people who keep them on here and say they are wonderful birds, you are right about the skittish part, when young if you spend a generous amount of time with them they will usually bond with you.

It's always best to get at least two ducks so they can keep each other company 24/7.

that is not true at all!!! i know so many people who have pekins and have some my self. they are loving, friendly ducks who will live just as great of a life as any other breed (with proper care of course, but that’s a requirement for all ducks)
