CCL mixed easter egger

And then on the tail feathers floppyness doesn't always mean male right?
Tails are actually the last physical sign of a male. I never look at the tails when sexing a younger chicken because the other feathers (hackles and saddles) will develop first. Plus, females can sometimes have funky tails when they're growing.

Hey! We're all always learning!
When I was talking about pattern, I was referring to the coloring. Here's an example of 2 EEs I had that looked identical at birth. This is when I knew which one was the cockerel.

Do you see how the one in front has an even color pattern? Starts with a light head and then gradually gets darker.

The boy (arrow) was very uneven in his coloring then when the rust color started popping up in his wings, it was a confirmation that he was a cockerel. This doesn't work on all breeds but often does with EEs.
Oh I see! The picture makes it make so much more sense thank you! I also heard that reddish or copperish colors behind the neck or in the wings was a male trait but a lot of my birds other than this particular Easter Egger are straight lavender or black or white with Splash breeds so I don't know if they'll ever get those golden colors pullet or cockerel but I assume they would just get more black or more other colors etc as I hatch from them (my male is a blue splash ameraucana so i know ill always be able to count on a pea comb for future generations but have no idea how he'll effect feather color over all my hen breeds)

also the one in front has the floppy feathers i was talking about with my ameraucana so that answers my questuon that those bumps of butt feathers lol arent necessarily male.

Thank you!!!

This is really good to know too thanks!

Also she is so pretty! What is she a mix of do you know?

I can only guess an ameraucana mix of some sort. I've still got her. She lays mint colored eggs!
I love her coloring! And do love a minty egg, that's why I chose a blue splash Ameraucana for my male, one because the pea combs are going to be great for my super cold snowy winters, but also I love that he has homozygous blue egg genes so if I put him over a white egger I get the really pretty sky blue, if I put him over my Marans I get a really pretty Olive, if I put him over my Easter and Olive Eggers I could potentially get those fun minty colors too! And then obviously over my other blue splash ameraucanas just create more true ameraucanas and just love the fluffy cheeks haha

I would love to see a pic of your Splash Ameraucana cockerel! I bet he's so handsome.

I dont have him yet unfortunately but I love looking at pictues of them haha all 4 of my current splash ameraucanas so far I believe are pullets, I wanted to get these 11 hens established and then to laying so then I can set up my next order in the spring to fill in egg color gaps and I'll order my males with that batch and then just breed from there on. Right now I think my spring batch I'm going to order 3 blue splash ameraucana males just in case there are any issues with transport, failure to thrive etc (and will pick the best gentleman out of the 3 to keep once theyre around 14ish weeks and probably sell the other 2) and then I don't really have any light brown or tan egg layers so probably just going to do a few black sex links or wyandottes or something like that to add some regular tan eggs to the mix. But I do love how the BSA roosters look! Will definitely post pics once I have him haha

Sounds like a great plan!
