CCX begging to be held

She is so beautiful. I am heartbroken to learn she has developed CHF. If you feel you'd like to drain the ascites to make her more comfortable, there are tutorials around here and how-to videos on YouTube as well. Above all, it's so hard to see our featherkids suffer. Love and light to you and dear Reese. :hugs

Reese passed away from heart failure at just over 22 months. She'll be missed greatly. Our gentle giant that had no idea she wasn't a regular sized hen. She flew (4 foot up and 15 feet lengths), ran and jumped up and down off 3 foot ledges.
Laid eggs until yesterday. She was not a quitter that's for sure.
Her sense of humour and snuggles will be missed so much.

:hugs:hugsI'm so, so sorry to hear about Reese.
I always enjoyed your photos of her - especially with the dog. What a sweetheart.
She was so loved and you did a great job taking care of her.

You are a wonderful person, @HeiHeisMom ! You clearly took great care of Reese and loved her so much! Chickens of her breeding suffer so much in this world, to see one so well loved is truly a miracle you have given God. He rewards His children when we love that way. I hope your life is truly blessed for giving Him back a chicken-child so loved. She is a better person for the good life you gave her. God’s peace be with you in your time of loss. 💔 :hugs🌹

We didn't intend to raise CCXs. But we loved the ones we were blessed with.
She was a special gal!

@hayley3 , CCX is Cornish Cross, as in a Cornish based broiler bird bred in a terminate “cross” plan (a 4-step breeding process designed to produce an ideal final specimen that grows to maximum size in a hurry for quick high-yield low-cost butchering). Any “Cornish Cross” you can buy is the result of a terminate cross plan, so it is inadvisable to attempt breeding them, as they are kind of the Godzilla of the chicken world (meaning, a scientific experiment) and will not breed true even if they are healthy enough to attempt it. This is to be distinguished from the Cornish heritage breed, which does not get nearly as big. If you want to learn more about terminate cross breeding, you can check out the Meat Birds ETC forum.

I have been resisting getting any CCX myself for a long time, fearing their health problems, but I think @HeiHeisMom has finally pushed over the edge. Reese was so adorable, I want to be loved like that!😢💔:hugs

Thanks for that great explanation Victoria! I wonder if that's what I see at the store..I am amazed sometimes at how big the chicken legs are and you know my Mom used to fry a whole chicken in a cast iron skillet because they were that small.
