We've been retired a few years now and I've always wanted chickens. I first saw BYC when researching breeds and finally purchased 17 chicks last April. I got 11 Australorp pullets and 6 Silkie straight run chicks. We ended up with 3 males, so I traded one for an Australorp male who was only 4 weeks older than my own flock.

Eight months in we're having a blast and couldn't imagine our farm without chickens. We sit for hours sometimes watching their interactions and actually had a pullet hatch out a small brood about 6 weeks ago. When we're not watching chickens we grow most of our own vegetables in a large garden. We're making plans to add piglets this summer, but we're not sure we'll be able to build their pens since winter has been extra harsh this year.

Looking forward to reading more about chickens and hopefully becoming experienced enough to help others!
