The rain is coming down like crazy today. I knew it was coming, though, and we haven't made solid doors for the coop yet, so I spent last night preparing for a change in weather. I draped the open front of the coop with a wool blanket for insulation, pressed plastic tote lids and boot trays against the open run pannels and covered the whole thing with tarps and heavy rocks. The redneck contraption ain't pretty, but this morning the girls are warm and dry.

Oh great. Now its snowing.Note to self: don't put the chickens before the coop.

The Buff is 12 weeks, the other two are six weeks old. I've checked on them several times today. They are dry and walking around the coop. I added more straw to the coop floor and added some pine pellets to absorb moisture, plus I just took them some warm oatmeal and they were quite happy to get the treat.

Outside we are at 3C/37F now and the snow is melting. This snow storm and drop in temperature was not predicted. Tomorrow it will be 11C/52F and sunny, they say.

It has lots of great potential. I think you should not have more than 3 birds for the space though. Rule of thumb....4 sq ft per bird inside the coop. They will be very happy if they are not too crouded, especially in the winter when they may stay inside more. Chicken math is hard to control! We always want more birds! Lol

You give good advice. Hubby and I have decided not to add more birds until we extend the run and add external nest boxes which will add to our square footage. Or maybe we'll just build a new coop.

Its funny. Hubby was resistant to getting the birds. Now that they are here he wants to build a bigger coop and run so we can add three more. This time we bought pullets. I think we may try chicks next. Yep. I'm starting to understand what you all mean by "chicken math". I'm already in love with the girls after just a few days.

I know what you mean. My hubby ( who never wanted any type of pet ever ) is in love with our chicks.....I think he spends more time with them than I do! I think I'm jealous!
