So we are trying to figure out what shingles to use on the roof. I have heard cedar is bad for the respiratory system of chickens, but what if it is on the outside of the coop, as roofing? Will if really affect them that much?

Cedar shingles on the roof would be fine (but pricey, though, eh?). I just wouldn't fill the inside of the coop with cedar shavings because then the volatile oils from all the exposed surfaces (it's the volatile oils that give cedar its distinctive smell) could potentially cause some respiratory issues, especially if ventilation is not quite adequate.

I used a cedar baseboard for my tractor for weight issues. There was some odor when I cut the wood but it dissipated quickly.

Cedar is only a (possible) problem as shavings, or if you get confused in building your coop and accidentally build a cedar closet instead

Cedar lumber or shingles or siding is not an issue. Really really.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

"Shakes" proper are pretty spendy, but if you look closely usually right next to the shakes are something called "undercourse shingles" They're not as thick, they probably won't last 20+ years more like 10, but they're literally a third of the cost (at least around here) It's all I use for roofing anymore.
