CEDAR!!

Alrighty, I am looking to buy a dog house asap for my chickens to lvie in. I am thinkin about this one http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=200289774&R=200289774

The wood is made out of cedar. Someone said NO cedar anthing, Ive heard people use it as the houses for chickens, I know NO cedar bedding, but can I get some ideas from you guys on this. I need to order very soon! Thanks so much

You need to give people a little bit longer than 22 minutes to respond. Not everyone is on line 24/7.

Cedar shavings are not good for chickens because the cedar gives off a toxic gas that is harmful to them. A little bit of cedar shavings mixed with pine shavings is OK.

Some people use cedar for framing of their coop because it does not rot as fast as other woods. They usually use other materials for the walls and have plenty of ventilation.

I would steer away from a structure that is all cedar. The one you are looking at will give off a lot of odor for a long time and does not have enough ventilation for birds that are cooped up.

thank you for the help I appreciate it, but I have asked this questions multiple times in the last few days and got 0 for a response, so I just thought I would throw it out there. I am not online 24/7 either and rarely get to post on other peoples responses so I know how it is...sorry if i seemed cranky!

You bring up some good points. But what if she were to seal the inside of the structure with some sort of wood sealer or paint? Would that keep it from giving off its "perfume"?

Why chance it? If you can get some that arent cedar, just do that.

I didn't see this till now, but dont have a TRUE answer. I know we were gonna buy a cedar shed and it still had a high cedar smell and it was over a year old at the time, sent DW's alergies into high gear, so we got a different one. I would get something different like tiffanyh said why chance it.

ALSO you said chickens how many? this has less than 7 cuft of floor space so if you go by 4 sqft/bird you can have just over 1 and a half birds providing that they get all the floor space, once you throw in feeders/waterers nest box if on floor, your down to 1 maybe 1 1/4 chickens.

In reference to using cedar chips, I have used them on my last batch of baby chicks they grew up fine , no breathing problems , and am using it in my 8x10 hen house, keeps the fleas and mites down,plus they are ledd likely to eat the it compared to pine shavings,The Old Timers used Cedar,
