seriously though, i have orpingtons LF and bantams, they are good little layers and friendly and don't fly much. the bantams lay as many eggs as the big ones, the eggs are smaller but just as tasty. I've never had australorps so can only comment on orpingtons but would say the smaller bantams are alot easier to handle especially if you are new to keeping chickens. It is a personal preference and i love my big imelda but bantams are definately my favourites and the orpingtons come in loads of lovely colours too.

having said that my best friend likes ths slimmer breeds and we completely disagree on which breeds are nicest so if you like big round fluffy bums orpingtons would be great but if you like slender elegant hens then maybe something like a black rock would be good. My BF regularly tells me how wonderful they are because they lay over 300 eggs a year.

oh and when designing your coop you should take the chicken math into consideration and allow a little extra room if you can, i can guarrantee you will want more later.
