I’ve had pekins in the past as well...raccoons showed them no mercy either 😕. I would love to have some more as they were great pets and really good egg layers but as big as the run is, I dont think it’s big enough to add them and a small pool as well and leave ample foraging space for all and I’m not sure I’m ready to let them run the property again until I deal with the raccoon problem.

I also have traps out along the edge of the property (The orange groves nearby have gained new residents lately 😇) and am also cutting down a lot of the smaller trees in hopes of lessening the appeal to the critters living in them. Once I feel it’s a little safer, I would love to give them new homes but just don’t feel like it’s the right time at the moment.

Thank you very much for the offer though and for the welcome! Glad to see so many “locals” on here and am learning lots so far and am enjoying very much going through the posts on the forums here.

Also a good deterrent is to find plants they dont like the smell of, have animal specialized alarm systems for the areas nearest to the coop, motion activated sprinklers, duck love it but mammals not so much (or marsupials like the opossum)

Would you like a raccoon trap? I have one for the same reason, it works really really well, i would give it away with my ducks if thats what you need to be able to keep them

So sorry for taking so long to reply...been an extremely busy week or so. I would love to add the ducks but am still worried about the room AND the drake...not really looking for a male of any kind. I’d also hate to leave the little guy all by himself if I just take the girls. 😕

New to the site but have raised chicks for years and thought I’d see what other folks are doing with theirs.

Have a small flock of 8 right now. Lost many in the past to the pesky raccoons but remedied that this year finally by building a large run and large coop. Is large enough to still consider them free run almost and they stay safer from the predators.

Run is totally enclosed 10’w x 24’l x 8’h and it connects directly to a 10’x12’ coop. Coop is also totally off grid and run by solar including auto chicken door, camera, timed interior lights, fans and water cooled air blower.

They also have lots of vegetation and plants growing inside and around the run to choose from when they feel like something different including bitter melon (they will totally fight you for those!), camphor trees overhead and lots of grasses with plenty of anoles (small lizards) to chase and eat.

The girls are 4 leghorns and 4 barred rocks and eggs are not a problem around here!

Hope to learn something new and offer something as well in the future. See y’all inside.
Welcome to BYC!
